How did you get started in roller derby?
A friend in college was a journalism major and had to do a bit on a sport and wanted to do something different and dragged me with him to a derby bout, tryouts were six days later, the rest is history. That was 2007 in Raleigh, N.C., with the Carolina Roller Girls.
How did you get your derby name and number and how does it sum you up as a skater?
I chose the name because I was more than a little pent-up stuck in a lab as a graduate student and needed to let off some steam, a lot of steam, regularly, and it wasn't too naughty. The number seemed appropriate, adversarial, with the "rough" theme, the numbers back-to-back. It doesn't sum me up as much as balance me out; I'm a terror on the track but the opposite off the track, and wouldn't be if it weren't for that outlet!
What do you love about being a derby girl?
How it accentuates or even insists upon the strong parts of being a woman, physically, mentally and psychologically. If you don't think you are strong it will find it in you, drag it out and show the crowd. The game strengthens you and the team always has your back, on and off the track. I have lifelong friends now and had life-changing experiences that have strengthened me thanks to roller derby and the people involved. I am far healthier now due to the exercise, the confidence, and the support network that comes with this sport.
What does your family think of you being a derby girl?
My dad has concerns for my career in cancer research, lol. And all worry about my safety, but everyone loves seeing such a different side of me, beating people up and all, shout out to MomAlexa.
What scares you?
Beracooter, she breaks collar bones! Seriously, I do fear getting seriously hurt, spinal injury, etc.
What does your future hold?
Hopefully a successful career curing cancer, a few babies, a few more wiener dogs, and fond memories of my younger days tearing up the track.
When is your next game?
A Superhero/Supervillian theme bout on Saturday, Sept. 24 at The Complex (536 W. 100 South), with doors at 6 and game at 7 p.m. Guess who I'll be? Come see to find out.
