After discovering the progressive house sounds of Sasha & John Digweed as well as other EDM (Electronic Dance Music) artists, Mike Sandoval says he got to the point where being a fan wasn't enough.

It was the late '90s when Sandoval became inspired by the music and started collecting turntables and equipment. Years were spent DJing at home, till DJ Paul B "took my bedroom skills and helped me put them in a club."

He has been DJing in clubs since 2006, which was when he started with a weekly gig at Circle Lounge. He eventually shifted his residency to the now-defunct Mynt Lounge and has brought his house sounds to private parties as well as guest performances at special events.

Nowadays, the father of three DJs from the comfort of his home, but rather than not having an audience, he is broadcasting for Internet radio station ETN.fm the second Thursday of every month. Playing to listeners all over the world for two years now, Sandoval is pleased with the response and how far across the globe he has reached. "I have a little following in China," he boasts.

Still bringing his house sounds to nightclubs, he has pulled back on the frequency with DJing for a live audience. "My home now is unofficially W Lounge," Sandoval says, adding that there are a few other clubs where he spins for special guest spots. Including a recent performance on a Friday at Metro Bar.

"I was the guy with the CDs [at Metro Bar]," Sandoval laughs about how he played alongside DJs who carried their music on their laptops.

Sandoval has long had a love for purchasing records and fondly looks back on a time where he would travel out of state to help him grow his collection. He shakes his head and smiles when he talks about how heavy and inconvenient carrying boxes full of records in and out of clubs became. "I used to spin vinyl, but I sold my turntables to get CDJs," he says.

Although he has not yet shifted to the laptop format, Sandoval continues to brings his discs and CDJs to the clubs for his recently-formed night called the Colors of House.

The third edition of Colors of House took place during Halloween when Sandoval brought in NYC-house legend DJ Victor Simonelli to W Lounge. He intends to hold Colors of House events monthly and bi-monthly and explains that the name of the night is to encourage people to not pigeonhole house music. "I don't want a name to stop the exploration of other genres," Sandoval says. The next event will be Jan. 28 with a special guest who will be announced soon.

Sandoval has found his passion in music behind the decks and says, "I don't do it for the money. I'm chasing that feeling that only music can give you and passing that on." [2] =>
