Art meets politics

Utah Arts and Museums is showcasing 20 works from the State Fine Art Collection on the fourth floor of the state Capitol. Among the pieces are works by J. Leo Fairbanks and Alvin Gittins. The exhibition belatedly fulfills the vision of Capitol architect Richard Kletting that the fourth floor of the Capitol, built in 1916 and lavishly restored in 2004, be used as a gallery for exhibitions of Utah artists and their work.

PechaKucha Night (pechakucha roughly translates to "chit-chat") began in Tokyo in nine years ago as a way for young designers to gather and share their work. It's grown into a worldwide party, with events in cities around the world, including Salt Lake City. PKnSalt Lake City is joining with the professional design association AIGA to throw a PechaKucha Night at The State Room. Presenters include artists Gary Vlasic, Mark Knudsen and David Ruhlman, and architects Bill Arthur, Prescott Muir, John Branson and Tim Lee, senior exhibit designer for the Utah Museum of Natural History.

In "Juxtapositions," printmaker Brent Haddock reuses older intaglio prints in new compositions, on display at the Loge Gallery at Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre gallery at Pioneer Memorial Theatre is free from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and before and after performances for ticket holders.

The faculty of the University of Utah department of art and art history will be exhibiting 70 works from 28 artists, including Zuzanna Audette, Van Chu, Al Denyer, Holly K. Johnson, Lenka Konopasek, Kristina Lenzi, Beth Krensky and Jimmy Lucero, in the Utah Museum of Fine Arts first-floor galleries. The exhibition reflects current trends in contemporary art along with traditional work in ceramics, printmaking, painting, digital imaging, video and other media. The show includes three gallery talks: Friday, Feb. 24, noon; March 21, 6 p.m.; and April 24, 3 p.m.

Get into women

"Cihuatl, Mujer, Woman" is a collaborative exhibit by Ruby Chac?n, Veronica Perez and Maritza Torres that blends their personal perspectives and individual experiences to explore the essence of women as multifaceted beings. Their artwork is inspired by the artists' stories, ancestors and memories.

Art grows in Park City

As reported earlier this week, BIG | Bjarke Ingels Group of New York and Copenhagen has been selected to renovate and expand the Kimball Art Center in Park City. The $10 million project will create a new Kimball Art Center out of timber reclaimed from Great Salt Lake railroad tracks. BIG also will renovate the existing Kimball into an education center with a rooftop sculpture garden. The project is expected to begin in mid-2013 and be completed in mid-2015.
